Grosvenor to develop luxury hotel

hotel-room-generic-THUMB.jpegJoint venture developers Grosvenor Britain & Ireland and Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels have received planning permission for their luxury hotel and flats scheme in Belgravia, SW1.

Westminster city council’s planning committee approved the proposal to redevelop 1-5 Grosvenor Place, SW1, into The Peninsula London, a 190-room hotel.

The plans include shops, bars, a spa and a ballroom as well as up to 28 homes with their own leisure and spa facility and separate entrance on Halkin Street, SW1. The scheme also provides 23 affordable homes on Buckingham Palace Road, SW1. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2017 and complete in 2021.

Peter Vernon, chief executive officer at Grosvenor, said the scheme would be a “milestone” in improving Belgravia.

He added: “The Peninsula London is an example of the long-term thinking and high-quality design required to maintain London’s status as a global city. The scheme will support thousands of jobs and brings tens of millions of pounds to the West End economy. The Peninsula London also provides a chance to improve the surrounding realm by widening pavements, planting more trees and providing easier road crossings.”

Clement Kwok, managing director and chief executive officer of Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, said: “This hotel has been designed to align with our group’s philosophy of developing a small number of the world’s best hotels in exceptional locations, while respecting the history and heritage of the local area. We are very optimistic for the long-term future of London as a business and tourism destination. ”

Gerald Eve advised on planning.
