Grosvenor has been granted consent to restore a former Mayfair church as a community space and shops.
St Mark’s Church in North Audley Street, W1, will provide 14,500 sq ft of shops and restaurants.
The approval follows a public consultation and talks with Westminster City Council, Historic England, The Diocese of London and Victorian Society.
The designs, drawn up in partnership with architect Donald Insall Associates, include the reinstatement of the building’s heritage features and the installation of a glass staircase.
Grosvenor aims to start work this year and complete the project in 2017.
St Mark’s Church, which opened in 1828, was designed in a Greek revival style by John Peter Gandy-Deering.
It was deconsecrated by the Church of England in 1974 and has been used as an event space, known as One Mayfair, since 2009.
Craig McWilliam, executive director, London estate at Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, said: “Grosvenor intends to use its experience in restoring architecturally and historically interesting buildings to open up a new place for the public in London’s West End.”
Ahead of the redevelopment, Grosvenor will host community events in the building, including screening films such as The Graduate, Moulin Rouge and Purple Rain as part of the Grosvenor Film Festival on 1-5 June.
