Gummer moves to split Hereford and Worcester

The Government is to reinstate the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire less than 24 years after they were merged and renamed Hereford & Worcester.

Herefordshire returns as an all-purpose authority while Worcestershire returns as a top tier council with its districts remaining. Elections will be held for the new counties next May and they will take over from Hereford and Worcester in April 1998. There will also be a poll in 1997 for Malvern Hills District, the boundaries of which have changed following the loss of territory to Herefordshire.
