Hadley Property Group has secured approval for 898 flats at Blackwall Yard, at the former Reuters site in Poplar, E14.
The developer received a unanimous vote from councillors at Tower Hamlets’ planning committee on 14 July.
A planning application submitted to the council in December 2020 proposes five buildings of between nine and 39 storeys, comprising residential, a primary school, a community hub and café, pub and grocery to be built around a public square.
It will see the redevelopment of the 4.7-acre car park next to Telehouse’s data centre.
The scheme has been designed by Glen Howells, White Arkitekter and Panter Hudspith architects over a period of two years. It includes 35% affordable housing by habitable room, with a 70:30 tenure split in favour of social rent (with equal numbers of London affordable rent and Tower Hamlets living rent).
Blackwall Yard is a short walk from East India DLR Station. Development will see the Thames Path reopened and the historic Grade II-listed dock turned into an amphitheatre-style garden, with an outdoor swimming pool and new pedestrian and cycle routes.
The pier will lead to a new riverbus station at Blackwall Yard, opposite the O2 Arena across the river on Greenwich Peninsula.
