Hammerson appoints new chief financial officer

Hammerson has hired James Lenton, from insurer AIG, as its new chief financial officer and executive director.

The REIT cited his “extensive experience in financing, rigorous capital allocation and business transformation” as the key rationale for the appointment.

Lenton will join the company on 16 September, and will take on his new role from 1 October. His annual salary will be £430,000.

He had joined AIG in 2013 as deputy chief financial officer for EMEA, before he was promoted in 2014 to chief financial officer and board member of AIG’s European group.

Previous roles also include working as a partner at EY, where he was tasked with developing a global strategy for its insurance assurance practice in 2011.

Lenton replaces Timon Drakesmith, whose departure from the REIT was announced in May. Drakesmith will step down on 1 October and leave on 15 November, following a handover period.

David Tyler, chair of the board, said: “During his career he has demonstrated significant success in working with and managing complex organisations which are experiencing periods of substantial change.

“We expect his track record in this area, combined with his ability to bring a fresh perspective, to be very valuable to the on-going management and performance of Hammerson.”
