Hammerson submitted plans for the redevelopment of Croydon town centre this week. The submission came as the REIT released the results of a survey showing that just 21% of residents wanted a giant mall built in the south London town – something that rival developer Westfield is proposing. Hammerson, with partners Royal London Asset Management and Irish Banking Resolution Corporation, wants to develop a 2.1m sq ft Whitgift Quarter linking the Centrale and Whitgift Centre, a plan its survey showed 58% of locals want. Westfield submitted plans for a 1.3m sq ft mall last month.
