Hammerson’s Centrale revamp goes to planning

Hammerson’s application for the £50m redevelopment of Centrale shopping centre is due to be heard by Croydon council next Thursday.

The REIT proposes 142,000 sq ft of new space at the 696,000 sq ft shopping centre in the heart of the town centre. It will provide a restaurant quarter and multi-screen cinema as well as two shops. Further reconfiguration of the centre and public realm improvements are planned.

Subject to planning, Hammerson plans to start work in March 2013, with the cinema and restaurants due to open in October 2014.

If approved, it will be the first tangible sign of redevelopment in Croydon town centre. Last month, Hammerson was appointed by Royal London Asset Management and Irish Bank Resolution Corporation, formerly Anglo Irish Bank, for the management and redevelopment of the Whitgift shopping centre, also in Croydon.

However, Westfield has an exclusive agreement with the Whitgift Trust, which owns the mall freehold and the remaining 25% long leasehold, to explore options to redevelop the mall.
