Hammerson secures consent for Leeds hotel

Leeds City Council has approved Hammerson’s plans to build a 205-bedroom hotel next to its Victoria Gate centre.

The 14-storey scheme, backed by Leeds Civic Trust, will be built on the site of a 17,975 sq ft temporary surface car park.

It is Hammerson’s third City Quarters project to gain consent so far. The landlord has been devising mixed-use masterplans for its existing assets to reduce its reliance on retail.

Robin Dobson, UK director of development and project management at Hammerson, said: “Not only does this mark an important step in our wider plans to create a thriving new cultural quarter in Leeds city centre, it also demonstrates progress in our wider strategy to support our existing assets by moving beyond pure retail.”

The news comes after the landlord’s plan to redevelop Birmingham’s Martineau Galleries was also given the green light this week, from Birmingham City Council.

Consent for a new residential development next to Dundrum in Dublin was also granted consent in December.
