Hammond urged to cut stamp duty in budget

Chancellor Philip Hammond is being urged to use his budget this autumn to cut stamp duty, described by critics as a tax on moving.

Stamp duty is discouraging the elderly from downsizing and hampers mobility significantly, Christian Hilber, a professor at the London School of Economics and co-author of a paper on the subject, said.

The situation has a big implication in terms of economic growth, a Cabinet minister said.
