Hampshire’s largest development gets the nod

Fareham Borough Council has approved plans for 6,000 homes at Welborne Garden Village.

The plans from Buckland Development were approved by the council at the committee yesterday (27 January).

Welborne will be set in 1,000 acres to the north of Fareham. It is Hampshire’s largest mixed-use development and will provide 5,700 jobs for the region.

The development will include 30% affordable housing and a care home, alongside 323,000 sq ft of commercial and employment space, 377,000 sq ft of general industrial and 431,000 sq ft of warehousing. There will be a supermarket and other retail, a hotel, health centre, three primary schools and a secondary school.

Mark Thistlethwayte, chairman of Buckland, said: “Welborne will be hugely significant in boosting growth and recovery of the local economy.”

The development relies on a £30m government grant in order to progress to allow an upgrade of the M27 Junction 10. The council is trying to secure this finance from the Housing Infrastructure Fund, after Solent LEP pulled its funding due to government spending cuts.
