Harlow Council invites bids for £35m town centre redevelopment

Harlow Council is inviting bids from developers for the £35m office, leisure and retail scheme on a 6.63 ha (16.4 acre) site on the southern fringe of the town centre.

The council and the Commission for New Towns are considering a PFI option for the the site which includes the area around the town hall, the water gardens and the adjacent car park.

A development brief is expected to be issued in about a month. It includes the provision of new comparision shopping and leisure facilities, new offices for the council and dedicated parking. The developer would also design the public transport access to the site and contribute to improvements to the public transport system and bus terminus.

The work is expected to start in September 1998 and be completed by the year 2000.
