Mervyn Orchard-Lisle MBE, former senior partner of Healey & Baker (H&B) and father of Paul Orchard-Lisle, has died at his home in France aged 94.
He joined H&B in 1936 and while there qualified by examination as a member of The Chartered Auctioneers and Estate Agents Institute.
During the second world war he served in the Royal Marines, reaching the rank of Major.
In the autumn of 1944 he took part in the Allied landings at Walcharen in the Netherlands.
In the 1950s and 60s he and his fellow partners Aubrey Orchard-Lisle, Arthur Hemens and Douglas Tovey were “the Big Four” who drove H&B’s expansion in the UK and then on the Continent.
His many clients included Town & City, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s.
Edward Erdman, in his autobiography People & Property, described him as a “man of principle who upheld the strict ethics of the profession”.
A keen golfer, Mervyn Orchard-Lisle was a past president of the Hertfordshire Golf Union and of the Golf Club Stewards Association.
For many years he owned horses trained by Jack Jarvis at Newmarket.
Mervyn Orchard-Lisle is survived by his second wife, Judy Anna Orchard-Lisle.
A memorial service will be held on May 29th at St George’s Church, Hanover Square, London W1.
