Heathrow expansion: Third runway approved as Government sets aside £2.6bn compensation for residents

The Government is expected to face tough opposition from its own and rival members of parliament after it set out long-awaited plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport this afternoon.

The transport secretary, Chris Grayling, confirmed that the Government would press ahead with the expansion but sought to reassure residents with plans for “up to” £2.6bn of spending on compensation, soundproofing and similar measures.

The plans will be put to a vote of MPs within 21 days and the Government is likely to need the support of opposition MPs as several Conservatives are expected to rebel.
