Plans to transform a Grade II listed mill into a food hall and offices in Wigan, Greater Manchester, have been given the go-ahead.
Heaton Group’s development forms the first phase of its £200m Eckersley Mills scheme, spread over 17 acres. It was previously a cotton-spinning site and contains a group of buildings that were built between 1883 and 1920.
Under the plan, Heaton will carry out a conversion of Mill One into an 80,000 sq ft complex, comprising a 22,000 sq ft food hall on the ground floor and offices on the upper three floors, including Heaton’s headquarters.
A separate planning application to restore Mill Three and create 137 loft-style apartments was submitted just before Christmas.
Heaton Group managing director John Heaton said: “For too long this site has suffered from a lack of vision and investment. Our plans are all about rescuing what we can and creating something the people of Wigan can be proud of.”
Heaton is also exploring plans to develop a purpose-built industrial estate close to the site.
