Heavy demand may prompt rise in city academies

The number of city academies could be increased to meet demand, according to the architect of the controversial programme.

The government has a target of opening 200 by 2010 but Lord Adonis, the junior minister in charge of the academies programme, said “outstanding” GCSE results and soaring demand for places could mean more would be required.
