First-time buyers planning to use their Help to Buy Isa bonus as part of their deposit are having to negotiate a smaller up-front amount with vendors and solicitors after discovering the bonus is only paid after exchange of contract.
The government has been criticised for the lack of clarity over the rules, and there have been calls for the terms to be amended.
Brokers and solicitors say, however, that savers should not be put off by the negative publicity, and note that vendors would normally not allow a sale to fail over a brief delay in the payment of a few thousand pounds.
