Hermes has submitted an EIA application for a 1.2m sq ft residential-led scheme next to Reading station.

Eight buildings are proposed in total, ranging from eight to 24 storeys, with 981 homes, all for the rental market, along with 360,000 sq ft of retail, offices and associated uses.

The site is owned by the Hermes Property Unit Trust, which acquired the former sorting office site from Royal Mail with outline consent in December 2012 for  £12.4m. The previous consent allowed for a mixed-use scheme incorporating between 315 and 400 homes and 370,000-540,000 sq ft of offices.

Reading will benefit from the opening of Crossrail when it becomes fully operational in December 2019. It was also announced in July that the frequency of rail services from Reading to central London will double from the original plan from two to four trains per hour.
