Britain is losing out on high-spending international visitors after the government scrapped tax-free shopping, according to a new data analysis.
Spending by non-EU visitors in Britain had surged in 2021 to £1,612 per capita, on average, from £1,036 in 2020, when Covid-19 travel restrictions were lifted and international flights returned.
But in 2022 that figure decreased by 17% to £1,346, and maintained a declining trend for the first six months of 2023.
Italy, Spain and France have all seen visitor numbers and spending rise.
