High street delivers worst performance in 12 years as retail crisis deepens

Britain’s high streets suffered their worst May trading in 12 years last month despite better weather and the feel-good factor of a royal wedding, in further evidence of the difficulties facing retail stores.

High street sales fell 2.2% year-on-year, according to the high street sales tracker from BDO. “It is eight months since in-store like-for-like sales have shown any real growth — above 1%,” the accounting firm said.

Britain’s retail sector is going through dramatic change, with a huge shift to online just as wages have been squeezed by higher inflation and consumers have decided to spend more on experiences.
