Historic England has said it will object to Sellar’s £1.5bn plans to redevelop Liverpool Street station, EC2, “in the strongest terms”.
The project, led by the Shard developer and MTR, operator of the Elizabeth Line, will upgrade the station in exchange for development of the airspace above it.
The proposals include a 21-storey tower above the terminus, which has a Grade II listing. This would also impact the neighbouring Great Eastern Hotel, which has Grade II* listing.
Historic England has been consulted on the plans and is preparing a response, but has indicated that it will oppose the proposals. The heritage body, which oversees the National Heritage List, has said the plans would be destructive to the “extraordinary historic character of the City of London as a whole”.
Chief executive Duncan Wilson added that the planned scheme “is fundamentally misconceived and misses the opportunity to unlock real public benefits”.
