Hockney pub fails to sell at auction

A village pub in the heart of Hockney country in East Yorkshire was one of the unsold lots at the Harman Healy auction last week.

The former public house in the village of Langtoft, near Driffield in the Yorkshire Wolds, was one of 35 lots offered at the auction in Kensington Town Hall, W8, on 8 August.

The Ship Inn lies close to a number of locations used in David Hockney paintings, including the work Tracks Into Wheat Field Near Langtoft.

Nonetheless, the pub failed to sell at the auction, despite receiving bids of up to £120,000.

Harman Healy reported a 66% success rate, selling a total of 23 of the lots offered to raise a total of £2.8m.

At the same sale a year earlier, Harman Healy sold 25 of the 29 lots offered, raising a total of £3.6m.

“The auction was busier than expected, enabling us to benefit from being the only major auction to take place in August,” said Harman Healy operations manager Matt Lewis. “The market is a lot harder than last year and there has been a definite slowdown after June.”

Harman Healy’s next auction will take place at Kensington Town Hall on 26 September.
