Holyrood parliament hit by water damage

The Holyrood parliament building in Scotland, which is due to open for business in just over two weeks, has sprung a leak.

Water came up through the drainage system into the basement, badly damaging a police office in one of the large committee towers.

The £431m project is three years late and 10 times over budget. Critics fear the flood may be a sign of worse to come because the building is sited above a system of underground springs.

Warnings that the building could be vulnerable to flooding were made during the Fraser inquiry into the cost of the development.
