Home ownership in England fell to 62.9% last year, a 30-year low, the English Housing Survey shows.
The percentage of people aged 25-34 and renting privately has jumped to 46.1% from 24.2% in 2005-06. Meanwhile, the number of people aged 35-44 and renting privately totalled more than a million. The figure for that age category is growing at a quicker rate than for younger people.
Those renting privately spend around 35% of their income on housing, against 28% for those in council or housing association accommodation. For owners-occupiers the figure is 18%.
