Home repossessions doubled last autumn as the cost of living and interest rates rose.
Official figures from the Ministry of Justice show a “marked increase” in tenants and owner occupiers losing their homes after Liz Truss’s mini-Budget, following a pause during the pandemic.
Among people with a mortgage claims for possession, court orders and warrants to seize homes all increased, and there was a total of 7,754 between October and December compared with 5,341 a year earlier. Repossessions by bailiffs more than doubled to 733 in the same period.
Court claims, orders and warrants against tenants rose even faster, with 45,335 compared with 25,586 a year earlier. Landlord repossessions doubled from 2,729 to 5,409.
