Diageo has announced plans to convert 12.6 acres of its 50-acre St James’s Gate site in Dublin to office, retail and hotel and leisure use along with 500 residential units. The site, located just over a mile to the west of the city centre in The Liberties, is home to the Guinness brewery.
Diageo said that the scheme would involve the transformation of “centuries-old vat houses, brew houses and cooperages into incredible spaces”. The brewer added that it had started looking for a development partner but would retain ownership and custodianship of a number of key buildings in the quarter, including the famous gate itself and Arthur Guinness’s residence.
The company also recently announced plans for a €25 million whiskey distillery on the site and invested €16 million in the Guinness Storehouse, a popular tourist attraction.
