Hornsey Town Hall refurb gets OK

Hornsey-Town-Hall-THUMBFar East Consortium International received planning permission for a £27m scheme to refurbish Hornsey Town Hall in north London into a boutique hotel and community arts centre.

Haringey Council approved the proposals, granting a long lease to FEC, which will also develop a restaurant and renovate the Town Hall square.

The hotel element of the scheme will cover the running costs of the Town Hall, while the refurbishment of the Grade II listed art deco building will be funded by new housing on the site.

FEC is working with Coplan Estates and will appoint a specialist arts centre operator.

It is in discussions with ANA Arts Projects, which operates and manages the interim Hornsey Town Hall Arts Centre.

Alan Strickland, Haringey cabinet member for regeneration, housing and planning, said: “We have listened to the local community and acted on their concerns, setting strict requirements for public access to the town hall and square, which will be written into legal agreements.”

John Connolly, head of development at FEC, said: “The Town Hall building is unique and our proposal to restore the building will ensure it remains one of most iconic buildings in London. Providing a long-term feasible scheme has been a huge problem over the years but these plans are sustainable and provide a community use.

“We are committed in delivering a scheme that will make the local residents proud and that they can enjoy for generations to come.”
