Hospital-to-hotel conversion planned for Birmingham eye hospital

The Alternative Hotel Company is to redevelop the former Birmingham & Midland Eye Hospital on Church Street, just off Colmore Row, as a 67-bedroom Hotel du Vin.

The company’s managing director, Robin Hutson, said: “We believe that some chain hotels are rather impersonal, homogenized affairs and there is a niche market for something a little more interesting. At this precise location, there isn’t much choice, although there is a huge commercial and business base here.”

Jon Bellfield, director of Barberry House Properties, which is involved in a joint venture with Richardsons Developments to develop the hotel, commented: “This will replicate a stylish Parisian hotel, with its own wine shop, champagne bar, health club and bistro, to bring some real individualism for guests staying in Birmingham.”

The site is sensitive because it is in a conservation area and although the hospital is not listed, it will be treated as so by the developers.

Work is due to start on site next month and the hotel will be ready to trade in spring 2001.
