Hotelier hops into action

The owner of the five-star Dorchester hotel on Park Lane has been given permission to transform the former Playboy Club into a 48-bedroom hotel.

The 20,000 sq ft building, which is sandwiched between the Dorchester and Hilton hotels at 45 Park Lane, W1, was until 1982 a members’ club run by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and staffed with “bunny girl” waitresses.

The Dorchester Collection plans to retain the structure of the building and revamp its interiors with an art deco theme. New York-based Thierry Despont has designed the hotel.

Work is scheduled to start on site early next year.
