Retailer House of Fraser is to open its first department store in the City’s Square Mile, creating more than 200 jobs, the group said today. The six-floor store will be located on King William Street and will overlook London Bridge.
Subject to planning permission from the Corporation of the City of London, it will open in spring 2002.
The 55,000 sq ft (5,109 sq m) store will be about half the size of a normal House of Fraser and will not stock large goods such as fridges, freezers or three-piece suites. It will instead focus on smaller products that can be carried home by commuters, such as clothing, kitchenware and light homeware.
John Coleman, chief executive, said: “The City has an enormous catchment area – not only the 10s of thousands who work there during the week, but the large residential populations both north and south of the Thames who we believe will welcome the introduction of a top store on their doorstep.”
House of Fraser, which also owns the Army & Navy stores, is also spending more than £30m refurbishing its London Oxford Street and Guildford stores and will open a new store in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire in 2003.
