House price growth slowest in six years

House prices grew at the slowest pace in six years in January, according to offical figures.

Average house prices in Britain rose by 1.7% to £232,000 in the year to January, slower than the 2.2% growth recorded last December, the Office for National Statistics said.

The fall was led by London, where prices dropped by 1.6%, worse than a fall of 0.7% in December. This was followed by the east of England, where prices dipped by 0.2% over the year, the region’s first annual decline since October 2011.
