House prices rose by 0.5% in April to an average of £260,441, according to the latest figures from Nationwide.
It is the first positive move in house prices since last August. Economists had expected house prices to continue to fall, predicting a drop of 0.4% in April.
House prices remain 4% below their peak in August 2022 and down 2.7% annually.
Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s chief economist, said the “tentative signs of recovery” had been prompted by improving consumer confidence.
