House prices fell by £9,000 in July amid the phasing out of stamp duty relief.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the average price of a home in Britain fell to £256,000.
But while annual house price inflation was down from June’s record 13.1%, it still stood at 8% compared to July 2020.
“The growth in house prices slowed substantially across all nations and regions after the stamp duty holiday on more expensive properties came to an end, with the number of transactions also at historically low levels,” said Sam Becket, the ONS’s head of economic statistics.
