House prices halted a three-month losing streak in June, rising by 1.1% on the month, figures from Nationwide showed.
The increase is the largest monthly rise since April 2015, and compares with a 0.2% fall the previous month. On the year, prices were up 3.1%, accelerating from a rise of 2.1% in May. Quarterly growth slowed to 2.8% on the year from 4.1% in the prior three-month period, however.
It is unclear whether the increase reflects strengthening demand conditions, or whether the lack of homes on the market is a more important factor, Nationwide chief economist Robert Gardner said.
