House prices stay hot as stamp duty holiday ends

House prices show no signs of cooling, even as the stamp duty holiday tapers to an end.

Over the past three months, prices have risen by 1.2%, according to Zoopla, taking the average cost of a home in Britain to £235,000. Over the past year, prices are up by 6.1%.

Wales continues to be the place where prices are rising fastest, up by 9.8% since this time last year, a rise matched by Liverpool. Prices in Northern Ireland climbed by 8.4%. In London, prices have grown by just 2.2%, below the present rate of inflation.

Zoopla said that there had been “no sign of a cliff edge in demand” as the stamp duty deadline approaches.

Put another way, the average home rose in value by £44 every day over the last six months.
