Housebuilders pay bosses more than they pledge to cladding crisis

The top 10n executives and shareholders at Britain’s biggest housebuilders have paid themselves more money since the Grenfell Tower fire than their firms have pledged to fix the cladding crisis.

Barratt, Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey, Berkeley, Bellway, Redrow and Vistry have set aside £643m for fire safety over the past three years.

The figure is about 4% of their profit over that period and a fraction of the estimated £15bn – and counting – that it will cost to make all flats in the UK safe.

Meanwhile, their bosses and owners have made a total of £708m in dividends, share sales and pay.
