Housing associations call for £42bn to build social homes

Housing associations have called for £42bn of funding from the UK government during the 2020s to build social housing — far in excess of the £2bn so far committed by Theresa May.

The prime minister garnered positive headlines when she promised the new money during her address to the National Housing Federation conference in London last month.

But the announcement failed to provide any clarity over how much public subsidy the sector will receive once its current five-year budget of £9bn ends in 2021.
