Housing boom highlights North/South divide

South East England has seen the biggest rises in house prices over the past decade, according to Rightmove, with Margate in Kent the only place where prices have more than doubled.

The average cost of a home in the seaside town in 2012 was £145,300. Today a home in Margate will cost you around £294,200.

At the other end of the scale, in Middlesbrough, average house prices have risen by just 6% over the past 10 years from £125,000 to £132,792.

Across the UK, house prices have increased by 53% since January 2012 to £341,000.
