Almost 200 housing association executives are paid more than the prime minister, with one receiving a £1m package last year.
At least 179 executives of the 50 largest associations receive more than Theresa May’s salary of £149,440 amid complaints from tenants about excessive service charges.
Set up in the 1960s to provide low-cost homes for workers, housing associations are the leading providers of social housing in Britain. They are non-profit-making organisations but critics say that some have adopted aggressive commercial practices.
