Housing minister eyes redevelopment of London council estates

Brandon Lewis has called for the regeneration of London’s inner city areas, saying that demolishing existing council estates and redeveloping the sites would mean an increase in the supply of new homes. Some £150m has been put aside for such plans.

The housing minister told a property conference that low-density housing was a reason for inner city area’s having fewer residents than in the period before the war, despite the capital’s population this year beating its previous record high hit in 1939.

In addition, Lewis said £252m from the Build to Rent fund will go towards the construction of 1,353 rental homes at Stratford’s Olympic Village and at sites in Southwark and in the west of the capital.
