Sir Howard Davies could be the next chairman of Royal Bank of Scotland, taking over from Sir Philip Hampton in summer, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
Davies is currently chairman of Phoenix insurance company.
Other people said to have been under consideration include insider Sandy Crombie, as well as Lord Robert Smith and Lord Gus O’Donnell.
