HSBC orders staff back to their desks

HSBC has become the latest business to order its staff to return to the office.

Bosses at the UK arm of the bank told workers last week that they should be at their desks for more than half of the week from October.

The bank’s previous policy was to allow teams to set their own hybrid working policies.

The back-to-office push comes as HSBC prepares to quit its long-time headquarters at 8 Canada Square in Canary Wharf for smaller quarters at the redeveloped BT office near St Paul’s. HSBC said the rise of hybrid working was part of the reason for the move.
