Hull URC launches design competition for footbridge

Hull URC Citybuild has launched an international design competition for a landmark footbridge over the River Hull in the city centre.

The competition aims to find a showcase design for a bridge providing pedestrian and cycle access between the East Bank area of the river Hull and the city centre.

The East Bank has been earmarked for residential-led mixed-use development  which will connect to the city centre  via the footbridge.

The bridge will also form part of a route from Victoria Dock and The Deep aquarium visitor attraction to the Old Town and Museums Quarter.

Citybuild has commissioned Arup to prepare the competition brief and provide advice and support for the competition.

It is expected that a shortlist will be drawn up by late autumn, following which public consultation will take place.

David Taylor, chair of Citybuild, said: “This competition, the first of its kind in Hull, invites entries from across the globe with the aim of creating a landmark bridge for Hull, one of the UK’s great waterfront cities.

“Citybuild has been at the helm of Hull’s dynamic renaissance over the last three years and we are keen to see the realisation of the bridge, which will support the regeneration of the East Bank of the River Hull where we have strong developer interest.”
