IBM HQ plans would “appal” brutalist architect

Plans to remodel the brutalist IBM HQ on the South Bank have been criticised by the architect’s son.

Sir Denys Lasdun’s concrete bunker building, seen as the “subservient” companion of the National Theatre “carbuncle” next door, is being remodelled by its Dubai-based owners.

They have applied for permission to add two storeys, strip away much of the concrete and introduce a mix of materials, from a glass-walled retail space at the base to a metal mesh for the plant on the roof.

James Lasdun said his father “would be appalled by this idea”. The National Theatre has also objected.
