Iceland to buy former Poundworld stores

Iceland has agreed a deal to take over 19 former Poundworld sites, but a separate rescue deal for part of the estate has collapsed.

The value retailer closed 335 stores after it fell into administration in June, vacating some 2.6m sq ft of retail space, according to Radius Data Exchange.

The frozen food retailer has agreed in principle to take 19 of the empty units. Four will become larger-format stores called the Food Warehouse, while 15 will be standard Iceland shops.

If the deal completes, the new Iceland stores are expected to open next year.

Separately, the Henderson family had agreed to take as many as 50 units, as well as the Poundworld brand name. However, the deal has since fallen through, with the leases on several stores now returned to the landlords.

A spokesman for Deloitte said of the Henderson family’s deal: “We had an agreement in principle, but the sale didn’t go through.

“Following the closure of all stores, the administrators are actively seeking offers for the sale of the Poundworld brand and related intellectual property.”
