Westminster city council has approved plans for an iconic Garden Bridge to be built across the River Thames.
The Thomas Heatherwick-designed bridge will measure 366m across the river and be up to 30m wide, and provide a home to 270 trees of 45 different species.
Some 7m visitors are expected on the bridge every year.
Consent comes after the other affected borough, Lambeth, last month also backed the plans by The Garden Bridge Trust.
Councillor Robert Davis, deputy leader of Westminster council, said: “This is something that is iconic and absolutely unique, and will be recognised right across the world.”
Approval has been welcomed by businesses as a potential benefit for the South Bank and Midtown.
Alistair Subba Row, senior partner at Farebrother, said: “Westminster’s decision represents a huge step forward, and the onus is now on securing the necessary funding for the project. We urge all stakeholders on both sides of this stretch of the river to give serious consideration to this as the benefits of the Garden Bridge will be enormous.”
The mayor of London will now have the option to call in the bridge for further scrutiny, or allow the scheme to go ahead.
