ICSC conference: Foot Locker to step up UK presence

Foot Locker is to double its UK presence by opening 10 stores in the next year, it emerged at today’s 2002 International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) conference.

The move is part of a five-year expansion plan which will see the fashion sportswear retailer open 350 stores in Europe.

It is inviting developers to come forward with stores of around 2,700 sq ft (250 sq m) in prime locations.

Senior vice-president in property Gary Brown said: “We want to develop quickly in all markets across Europe. The 12 to 24-year-old bracket is our core market with 65% of sales coming from this group.

“Research has shown that this is the fastest-growing segment in today’s retail environment as young people are experiencing a tremendous increase in disposable income.”

Foot Locker is one of the retailers attending the ICSC conference in Monte Carlo, alongside developers such as Hammerson and Lend Lease and agents Cushman & Wakefield Healey & Baker and Jones Lang LaSalle.
