IGD forecasts future food retailing concepts

The Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) has identified two new store developments in food retailing which it expects to take hold by 2010.

Its report Grocery Retailing 2000 identifies the destination store which will include cinemas, restaurants and doctors’ surgeries. The second is the meal solution store – a cross between McDonald’s and Fortnum & Masons.

It says neighbourhood stores will continue to meet the demand for impulse and emergency items and the discount sector will continue to cater to the price-conscious.
