Ikea delays Oxford Street store

Ikea has pushed back the opening of its Oxford Street store until next year, owing to delays in the development process.

The Swedish furniture and homeware retailer had planned to open an outlet at 214 Oxford Street, W1, the Grade II listed former Topshop building, this year. But Ikea has now said it will open the store by the autumn of 2024.

The investment arm of Ingka Investments, the largest franchisee of Ikea, acquired the central London store for £378m in 2021 after Philip Green’s Arcadia retail empire fell into administration.

The renovation project at the site is creating an 82,000 sq ft store covering three floors, along with four floors of office space.

Ikea’s boss in the UK, Peter Jelkeby, said retailers needed to be “supported in every way possible” for Oxford Street “to remain the iconic destination it has always been”.
