Industry cyclists go for gold

One of the stars of the track cycling at the Rio Olympics and a former Tour de France star celebrated the success of industry charity Club Peloton at the London Olympic Velodrome on 5 October.

Owain Doull, winner of a gold medal in GB’s pursuit team, and Jens Voigt, a 17-time Tour de France rider, were among the guests at the annual Club Peloton Gala dinner and race day last night.

While much of the crowd ditched their Lycra for suits and champagne, seven teams from across the industry took to the world-famous track to race against each other. Despite Voigt joining the Club Peloton team, a team from Knight Frank were victorious.

As well as celebrating the fundraising efforts of the industry through Club Peloton’s charity rides – Cycle to MIPIM, Cycle to MAPIC and PedElle – the event included awards for the built environment’s commitment to encouraging and making cycling safer.

More than half of all cycling fatalities in London involve heavy goods vehicles, which are often connected in some way to the property sector.

Awards went to Make for its Hiscox UK HQ in York for best cycling facilities in a new development; Andy Yates from Webb Yates Engineers for promoting cycling within their staff and activities, through their networks or across the industry; Multiplex won the road safety award for its work making the White Collar Factory site on the notorious Old Street roundabout, EC1, safer for cyclists; and to CGL, for its conceptual designs of new cycling facilities. Its Velo Village concept envisages a development with cycling at its heart. Dedicated cycle routes and specialist storage both at home and in office work together to encourage people to ditch cars and take up cycling.

Nick Hanmer, Club Peloton chief executive, said: “We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate another year of Club Peloton activity. The blend of multi-day riding, business networking and targeted and record-breaking fundraising has proved to be a very powerful combination. The property industry should be rightly proud of the £2.5m in grants given over 11 years to support those that need it most.”
