Inheritance tax could be scrapped before election

Inheritance tax could be scrapped by the Conservatives in a bid to win more votes in the next election.

The Times has been told that there is a “live” discussion among senior figures in Downing Street about abolishing the levy as the Conservative Party’s headline tax offer next year.

Inheritance tax would be cheaper to cut than income tax, at a cost to the Treasury of about £7bn a year. A 2p cut in income tax would cost £13.7bn. Supporters argue that cutting “death duties” could be a “game-changer” in blue wall seats in the south of England that the Tories are defending.
